The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has disclosed that no fewer than 69 people died in road accidents across Lagos in the first quarter of 2026, raising fresh concerns over traffic safety and compliance in the state.
According to the agency, the fatalities were recorded in multiple incidents involving reckless driving, speeding, and disregard for traffic regulations. LASTMA noted that despite ongoing awareness campaigns, many motorists continue to violate road safety rules, contributing significantly to the rising number of crashes.
The agency also revealed that its technology-driven enforcement systems captured more than 17,000 traffic offences within the same period. These violations ranged from illegal parking and lane indiscipline to running red lights and driving against traffic.
Officials said the deployment of smart cameras and digital monitoring tools has improved detection and enforcement, making it harder for offenders to evade penalties. They added that the data gathered is being used to identify high-risk areas and guide targeted interventions.
LASTMA reiterated its commitment to strengthening road safety through a combination of enforcement, public education, and technology. It urged motorists to comply with traffic laws, warning that stricter measures would be implemented to curb violations and reduce avoidable deaths on Lagos roads.
