Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has clarified its decision to decline the use of a proposed venue for a lecture involving Peter Obi, citing administrative and procedural considerations.
In an official response, the university stated that the rejection was not politically motivated but based on internal guidelines governing the use of campus facilities. Management explained that all requests for venues must comply with established processes, including proper scheduling, approvals, and alignment with institutional priorities.
The controversy arose after reports suggested that the university had blocked the event, sparking debate among students and political observers. However, OAU maintained that the decision was strictly administrative and consistent with its standard operating procedures.
University authorities emphasised their commitment to maintaining order, fairness, and neutrality within the institution, noting that no individual or group is exempt from its regulations. They added that alternative arrangements could be explored if due process is followed.
The development has drawn mixed reactions, with some expressing concern over perceived restrictions on political engagement, while others supported the university’s stance on adhering to established rules.
OAU reiterated that it remains open to academic and public engagements but insists that all such events must be conducted in line with its policies to ensure smooth operations and campus stability.
