Nigeria’s aviation sector is on the brink of disruption as ground handling companies warn they may suspend operations over a growing ₦9 billion debt owed by domestic airlines.
Industry operators say the unpaid fees, which have accumulated over time, are now threatening the sustainability of ground handling services, including aircraft marshaling, baggage handling, and passenger support. They argue that continued operations under such financial strain are no longer viable.
The ground handlers have issued a strong warning that unless urgent steps are taken to settle the outstanding obligations, they may be forced to withdraw services in the coming days. Such a move would effectively cripple airport operations nationwide, as airlines depend heavily on these services for turnaround and safety compliance.
Sources within the sector indicate that several domestic carriers are struggling with rising operational costs, including aviation fuel, foreign exchange pressures, and maintenance expenses, which have contributed to their inability to meet financial commitments.
Aviation stakeholders have expressed concern that any suspension of ground handling services would lead to widespread flight delays, cancellations, and stranded passengers across major airports.
Regulatory authorities are reportedly engaging both airlines and service providers in a bid to resolve the standoff and prevent a full-blown crisis. However, with the deadline looming, uncertainty remains high over whether a last-minute agreement can be reached to keep operations running smoothly.
